Understanding the recent history of China is critical to understanding Chinese medicine-it's history has defined the books we read, the schools we have, and the teachers we meet.

In this fascinating lecture, Andrew Nugent-Head takes us on a tour of the issues and realities facing Chinese medicine today in Mainland China. Beginning with a brief history of Chinese medicine from the invasion of the Western Allied Powers in the late 1800's through the Nationalist Reforms, Communist Restructuring and the current free-for-all market economy, Mr. Nugent-Head addresses all of the major factors contributing to the state of Chinese medicine in China today. From the socialization of Chinese Medicine to the newly emerging high end clinics and spas; the parallel paths of traditional Traditional Chinese medicine and modern Traditional Chinese Medicine over the past 50 years; how mainland Chinese view Chinese medicine, the low status practitioners have in society and the Brain Drain facing Chinese medicine educators; the re-emergence of charlatan practitioners and their effect on the trust in Chinese medicine; herbal usage and issues surrounding quality, convenience and prescription skill; and the return of the “Confucian” individual interested in Chinese medicine. All of these factors play into the landscape of Chinese medicine today and its evolution in the next decade; all of these factors play into the emergence and treatment of pandemics, drug resistant bacteria, and seemingly mysterious virii moving around the world.

Whether you are a practitioner or patient, a sinofile or lay person, this is an incredible opportunity to listen to a first hand account from someone who has lived in China for almost 30 years.
