Online Videos of Seminars & Lectures
ATS’ mission is to preserve, document and disseminate China’s traditional knowledge, and bringing this to you in books, DVDs and online is an important part of this work. With advances in technology, we are now actively encouraging the practitioners we work with to consider releasing a small sized version of their material for free on the web. Most of the videos featured on our site are also available as DVDs from our store–if you found the information important to your practice of the traditional arts, please consider purchasing a copy for your permanent library or making a tax deductible donation online.
“Understanding the recent history of Chinese Medicine is critical to understanding Chinese medicine—its history has defined the books we read, schools we have, and teachers we meet.”
In this fascinating lecture, Andrew Nugent-Head takes us on a tour of the issues and realities facing Chinese medicine today in Mainland China. Beginning with a brief history of Chinese medicine from the invasion of the Western Allied Powers in the late 1800's through the Nationalist Reforms, Communist Restructuring and the current free-for-all market economy, Mr. Nugent-Head addresses all of the major factors contributing to the state of Chinese medicine in China today. From the socialization of Chinese Medicine to the newly emerging high end clinics and spas; the parallel paths of traditional Traditional Chinese medicine and modern Traditional Chinese Medicine over the past 50 years; how mainland Chinese view Chinese medicine, the low status practitioners have in society and the Brain Drain facing Chinese medicine educators; the re-emergence of charlatan practitioners and their effect on the trust in Chinese medicine; herbal usage and issues surrounding quality, convenience and prescription skill; and the return of the “Confucian” individual interested in Chinese medicine. All of these factors play into the landscape of Chinese medicine today and its evolution in the next decade; all of these factors play into the emergence and treatment of pandemics, drug resistant bacteria, and seemingly mysterious virii moving around the world.
Whether you are a practitioner or patient, a sinofile or lay person, this is an incredible opportunity to spend an evening listening to a first hand account from someone who has lived in China for almost 25 years.
