This 20 Hour video series features the Energy-Bodywork System of Yin Style Bagua, which combines powerful Qi techniques with Chinese medical bodywork. Originally drawn from Daoist, Buddhist, and folk treatment methods, the Energy-Bodywork Healing System reached its peak when its founder, Dong Haichuan, worked in the Qing Dynasty court. It is divided into four major sections: developing strong and sensitive Qi; 24 basic hand techniques; diagnosis through touch; and treatment protocols.

In this PDA course, Dr. Xie Peiqi demonstrates the 24 basic hand techniques on a model patient, showing each technique’s application on the front, back and sides of the body. Dr. Xie then demonstrates the technique as a self massage to treat one’s own illnesses or simply maintain health.

In this 7 Hour seminar, Association for Traditional Studies director Andrew Nugent-Head tackles making Qi a tangible and reliable part of one’s treatments and practice. Based on his years training with the late Dr. Xie Peiqi in Beijing,  this set features discussion, demonstration and question answering designed to clarify the important skill of affecting Qi in patients.

“The important task is not to just reliably achieve ‘De Qi’, but to decide what to do with it each time. Whether it is due to misunderstanding or misrepresentation, tangibly and reliably manipulating Qi with one’s hands or a needle seem to have taken an esoteric turn in the West. In actuality, it is a very grounded and simple process. What was once common knowledge is now being seen as high level skill. Sadly, this has greatly affected the efficacy, and thus reputation, of Chinese medicine.”

One of the most often overlooked aspects of being a Chinese medicine practitioner is the cultivation of the self. In forgetting to train their bodies, minds and spirits, practitioners lessen their ability to give physical treatments such as acupuncture, bodywork or Qi work and run the risk of 'burn out' due to fatigue or poor health from over- practice. Training in the Chinese or Japanese martial arts has always been an honored tradition of self cultivation in the East, and many of Asia's martial artists have also been famous practitioners of traditional medicine.

Born in 1928, Liu Shichang is Dr. Xie Peiqi’s oldest surviving disciple who began training with him in 1958. Liu Shichang was a contemporary and close friend of the doctor’s, looking out for each other through the difficult history of the late 50’s and 60’s. His words and skills are an intriguing glimpse into how Dr. Xie spoke about and taught Bagua in his middle years.

Filmed with two camera angles in a very free flow fashion, this is a gem of information for beginner and experienced practitioners alike seeking to maintain health into old age through cultivating a martial practice.

The most important clinical book in Chinese Medicine is the Shang Han Lun. But what is the most important part of the book? The Preface!

Overlooked by readers and often omitted by publishers, the preface contains the keys to understanding the rest of the Shang Han Lun. In this fascinating discussion, Andrew Nugent-Head awakens the hidden meanings line by line, explaining references Zhang Zhongjing makes that are often missed by Chinese and western scholars alike.

“This is how I learned the classics here in China: in a teacher’s home, the ancient books coming alive and the passions of ancient authors filling the room as if they were speaking their words to you. Zhang Zhongjing’s Preface is the most exciting and important part of his Shang Han Lun. Understanding what he is really saying is the key to understanding his entire book. In this lecture, I share the Preface just as my teacher, Dr. Li Hongxiang, shared it with me. This lecture was only possible through Dr. Li Hongxiang’s teaching, and a special acknowledgement and thanks must be given to him.”

In this lecture series, Andrew Nugent-Head discusses line by line part 01 of Chen Xiuyuan's incredibly famous Three Character Classic for the Study of Medicine. Part 01 is the Source and Flow of Medical History. He not only translates every line, but also translates and elucidates Chen Xiuyuan's own commentary on the meaning of each three character stanza.

This course gives non Chinese speakers direct access to a critical book on the study of Chinese medicine without having to learn the language.

In this fascinating lecture, Andrew Nugent-Head takes us on a tour of the issues and realities facing Chinese medicine today in Mainland China. Beginning with a brief history of Chinese medicine from the invasion of the Western Allied Powers in the late 1800's through the Nationalist Reforms, Communist Restructuring and the current free-for-all market economy, Mr. Nugent-Head addresses all of the major factors contributing to the state of Chinese medicine in China today. From the socialization of Chinese Medicine to the newly emerging high end clinics and spas; the parallel paths of traditional Traditional Chinese medicine and modern Traditional Chinese Medicine over the past 50 years; how mainland Chinese view Chinese medicine, the low status practitioners have in society and the Brain Drain facing Chinese medicine educators; the re-emergence of charlatan practitioners and their effect on the trust in Chinese medicine; herbal usage and issues surrounding quality, convenience and prescription skill; and the return of the “Confucian” individual interested in Chinese medicine. All of these factors play into the landscape of Chinese medicine today and its evolution in the next decade; all of these factors play into the emergence and treatment of pandemics, drug resistant bacteria, and seemingly mysterious virii moving around the world.

Whether you are a practitioner or patient, a sinofile or lay person, this is an incredible opportunity to spend an evening listening to a first hand account from someone who has lived in China for almost 25 years.

Shrouded in mystery until the 1990's, Yin Style Bagua is one of the last remaining arts that encompasses Chinese medicine, martial arts, and internal cultivation in one complete system. Based upon the Yi Jing, or Book of Changes, the art of Bagua reached its greatest fame during the time of the Empress Dowager. By the 1980's, Yin Style Bagua practitioners had all but vanished, and their was only one person left trained in the complete system. Fearing it would be lost, the late Dr. Xie Peiqi (1920-2003), chose to openly teach the art through the Association for Traditional Studies. While much of his knowledge was captured in book and video, Andrew Nugent-Head was the only person fully trained in each branch of Yin Style Bagua by Dr. Xie personally before he passed away.

Being based on the Yi Jing, Yin Style Bagua's medical knowledge views illness, diagnosis and treatment in terms of eight functions or movements of Qi: Opening, Closing, Gathering, Dispersing, Raising, Lowering, Exiting, Entering. Health is the natural interchange of these functions within the organs and the channels; illness is either an excess, deficiency or malfunction of these eight movements; diagnosis is understanding these functions and recognizing their patterns when manifesting as illness; and treatment is being able to create or control these eight functions of Qi in a patient by acupuncture, bodywork, and herbs.

Dr. Xie's closest student for 10 years, Andrew Nugent-Head combines theory, case examples and demonstration of techniques to shed light on the inner workings of what was one of the most secretive styles of Chinese medicine in Beijing.

“The universe is a macrocosm of inter-connected relationship, each person is a microcosm of the universe. To understand the universe, one must study oneself; to understand oneself, one must study the universe.” The Yi Jing, or Book of Changes, enlightens this, and the art of Bagua manifests it through martial arts, medicine, and internal cultivation (daoyin). While its martial arts were famous, and its medicine kept secret, the true core of Bagua was daoyin. Through daoyin, the martial artist attained mental strength and physical agility; and the medical practitioner developed deep health and body awareness.

Daoist by nature but influenced by Buddhism, the amount and variety of internal practices within Yin Style Bagua are staggering. In this seminar, Andrew Nugent-Head lays out the theories of daoyin within Yin Style Bagua and explains the most famous exercises, with walk-through demonstrations and Q&A. Intellectually and physically challenging, this seminar is presented in a fun, up-beat manner, covering how Yin Style Bagua practitioners explore Pre and Post Heaven existence, understand illness, treat patients, and develop powerful bodies, all by understanding the internal self and thus the external world.
